Fourth DRK Blood Drive at Goldbeck and nicos Sees High Turnout Once Again

In Germany, approximately 15,000 units of blood are needed every day. At the same time, the German Red Cross expects an age-related decline of up to 275,000 donors in the coming years.
To raise awareness of the importance of regular donations, the Münster branch of Goldbeck, the network specialist nicos, and the DRK Blood Donation Service West have initiated a joint blood drive for the fourth time at the rob17 office complex. They called on all local companies to participate.
Münster, May 5, 2026 – On Wednesday, April 29, the office location on Robert-Bosch-Straße once again served as a drop-off point for dedicated donors. Goldbeck and nicos encouraged around 30 employees to donate blood right at their workplace. The initiative highlights the role that low-barrier opportunities in the workplace can play in encouraging participation.
“A blood transfusion can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why it’s important to us to make a tangible contribution here—and we’re doing so for the fourth year in a row with our joint blood drive,” says Christian Terwey, manager of the Goldbeck branch in Münster.
As the new managing director of nicos GmbH, Martina Balewski is pleased to continue the successful collaboration with Goldbeck on the blood drive: “For me, taking responsibility for our employees and society is an integral part of our corporate culture. This also includes fostering a sense of commitment in the workplace,” Balewski emphasizes. “Donating blood takes only about 30 minutes. The high level of participation among our employees once again shows how deeply rooted this cause is at the rob17 campus.”

Blood donation right at the workplace
A team from the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service West conducted the blood drives on site. A selection of iron-fortified beverages and snacks was available for the donors; as a small token of appreciation, they received a versatile fitness band.
“In theory, many more people could donate blood regularly,” says a representative of the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service on site. “Men can donate up to six times a year, and women up to four times. In reality, only a small fraction of registered donors take advantage of this opportunity. Consequently, recruiting first-time donors remains a key component of the blood supply.”
Focus on serving the region
Recent data from Münster shows that the number of blood donations has been declining for several years. Following 12,273 whole blood donations in 2023 and 11,875 in 2024, only 11,358 whole blood donations were recorded last year—a further decline of nearly 500 donations compared to the previous year. This trend underscores the importance of local initiatives to stabilize the trend and attract new donors. The decline is particularly pronounced among younger age groups under 30.
The donated blood units are used in regional hospitals and clinics. Individual components such as plasma, platelets, or red blood cells are used to treat cancer patients, accident victims, or people with autoimmune diseases, and are also essential for the production of life-saving medications. Each individual donation can thus potentially help up to three people.
